SD60 Diesel Locomotive, 1989 Era
The SD60 locomotives came on to the property in 1989 due to the explosion of
coal business coming out of the Powder River Basin and down the Burlington
Northern. Initially the KCS was able to pool power with the BN while waiting on
their SD60's to be built but even then there were many instances of the road
being power poor. Prior to these, there were the ten SD50 plus the four SD40X prototypes for the SD50 as the largest/newest power on the road. After that
came the 12 cylinder SD40-2 locomotives which once the 60's came on line the
KCS was able to swap out three SD40-2 locos for just a pair of 60's.
This book shows the details all around these units and includes one that had a
fire in the engine compartment and was awaiting rebuild/repair. Inside are
examples of the three main lettering differences on these unit cabs as well.
