Kansas City Southern SD40-2
Era 1972
The SD40-2 Locomotives from EMD were the workhorses of the North American Class 1 Roads throughout the 1970's and 1980's with over 4000 units built.
This book shows the details of these units on the KCS in both the white and the newer gray paint schemes. There are chapters devoted to the cab interior which
was one of the last of the style designed before the manufacturers switched to
the more ergonomic desktop consoles for train crews. Other variations shown
inside illustrate the different radiator screen types, the different height radiator fan shrouds and housing tops. Also the KCS was a big proponent of distributed
power using remote control helpers. Those units built with the longer snoots to accommodate the radio equipment also had redesigned engine hand brake wheel
versus the lever and are shown alongside the regular type locomotives.
