Spying on steam! Following WWII, railway operations in certain countries were considered strategically vital and the taking of photographs could result in the loss of both films and freedom. By 1970, however, limited access was gained by a number of photographers who succeeded in recording the last steam locomotives. Steam Beneath the Red Star is an album of 456 photographs depicting a variety of steam in Eastern Europe, North Korea, Vietnam, China, Cuba and the former Soviet Union.
